Have you transitioned from HipChat yet?

Real-time communications has been a big part of Atlassian's portfolio since they acquired Hipchat in 2012. Just last year, in September 2017, they announced the planned replacement of Hipchat with Stride

Since then, a lot have happened with the market. The latest push was in early July, when Microsofts introduced their offer to provide its Teams platform for free to anyone, even those who do not yet subscribe to Office 365.

Atlassian took the next step in this market change with it’s announcement that Slack would acquire the intellectual property rights of Hipchat and Stride while Atlassian made an equity investment in Slack.

The plan for the Atlassian products is now that no new Teams of Hipchat and Stride are available since July 2018. Existing groups will be able to continue to add users and use Stride and Hipchat Cloud products until February 15th, 2019. Existing Hipchat Data Center & Hipchat Server customers will have support through the end of their license period.

Slack and Atlassian have long shared integrations, both companies have agreed to jointly push for better and new integrations with many being showcased during the Atlassian Barcelona Summit.

 

Effects for Customers

Whatever you think of this move from Atlassian's side, a forced transition is never pleasant. That being said, for the majority of customers and users this move can be seen as a positive development. Slack is one of the current market leaders for IT teams and Microsoft Teams is pushing strongly forward. So it makes sense to refocus any effort on products which usually is already a part of companies software suite. In many cases HipChat/Stride was only one more communications platform that had a secondary place in the software portfolio. Refocusing on the corporate primary platform, in such cases, makes a lot of sense.

 

Self Hosted Option?

The primary negative is that Atlassian's proposed solution of Slack, is a cloud based solution. This will be an issue for anyone that require the work to be behind a secure firewall with full control of software and data.

While its understandable, with the announcement of Atlassian and Slacks cooperation, it would have been nice to see Atlassian provide some alternatives for the companies that do reside behind a firewall and require that self-hosted solution. But as can be expected whenever a change happens for one supplier, competitors will step up and provide solutions. Currently, the two most suggested solutions are either Rocket Chat and Mattermost with multiple others pushing forward to fill the empty space left by Atlassians products.

As of right now, Skype for business, could be added to this list but with Microsoft announcing that the Skype business line is up for discontinuation in favor of Teams, and that the self-hosted option will go away, any organization that views this decision to be a solution for more than the next two years, should look elsewhere.

 

Migrating to slack

For those that do not require the self-hosted option the most future secure solution will be Slack. The joint investment guarantees a degree of cooperation which should provide a lot of additional functionality to the slack platform as we go forward.
